Why Paperwhites Are a Holiday Favorite

Paperwhites are simple to grow. You place the bulbs in soil or pebbles, keep the water level at the base of the bulbs, and wait. They sprout fast and bloom in about four to six weeks. Planting now sets you up for flowers near Christmas or early January.

They work in many styles of homes. The blooms are bright and clean. The stems stay slender. The scent is distinctive. Most find it light and sweet, though it can be stronger in warm rooms. They look good on a mantle, dining table, kitchen counter, or small side table.

They make a simple gift. People enjoy receiving something that grows. It shows thought and care. No experience is required, so anyone can grow them. The growing process is part of the gift.

How to Plant Paperwhites

You can plant Paperwhites in soil or in a layer of pebbles with water. Both methods work indoors.

1. Choose a container

A container at least four inches deep is enough. Your gift kit includes a square planter that fits well in most rooms.

2. Prepare the base

Soil method:
Fill the container halfway with potting soil. Set the bulbs with the pointed end up. Add enough soil to keep the tops of the bulbs visible. Water lightly.

Pebble and water method:
Add two to three inches of clean pebbles. Place the bulbs on top with the bases touching the stones. Add water until it reaches the base of the bulbs. Do not cover them with water.

3. Start the rooting period

Place the container in a cool room for the first week. Roots will start forming from the base of the bulbs.

4. Move to bright light

After you see roots, move the container to a spot with bright but indirect light. A steady indoor temperature around 65 to 70 degrees works well.

5. Maintain moisture

Check the container every few days. With soil, water when the top surface is dry. With pebbles, keep the water level at the base of the bulbs. Avoid overwatering.

6. Provide support if needed

Paperwhites grow between twelve and eighteen inches. Indoors they sometimes lean. You can use small stakes or place several bulbs close together for support.

Ideas for Displaying and Gifting Paperwhites

You can plant four to six bulbs in one container for a fuller look. A simple ceramic bowl or the square planter from our kit works well. Wrap the finished container in clear cellophane with ribbon for a ready-made gift.

Vintage containers, glass vases, or rustic vessels all work. Pebbles provide a clean look in modern spaces. Soil gives a more natural feel. You can add moss on top for a finished holiday touch.

Small ornaments, a piece of ribbon, or a few sprigs of pine can be placed around the bulbs without affecting growth.

If you want gifts to bloom at different times, stagger your planting by one week for each recipient.

A Gift That Fits the Season

Paperwhites give the home a fresh scent at a time of year when outdoor plants are dormant. The white flowers bring a sense of calm. They last well through the holidays and into the new year.

If you want something simple, natural, and thoughtful to give this season, Paperwhite bulbs are a practical choice. They pack and ship well. They are easy for anyone to grow. The end result is a set of fresh white blooms when people need them most.
